The value of a smile

By way of introduction to you, and because you can’t physically see me smiling at you right now, let’s talk about the beauty of smiles. We have all been through some mighty tough times, as our country battled Covid 19, and sometimes, it is not too easy to smile. And yet, physically, it is the simplest thing in the world to do.

Let me explain. The expression we wear on our face is far more important than the clothes we wear, or the money we have in the bank. Our welcoming smile can be worth a million pounds, because immediately, people like you, they smile back. When someone sees a smile, they automatically think, “You like me” “You are happy to see me”  A smile will help you to strike up conversation.

If you think of maybe sitting in a doctor’s surgery, no one smiles, everyone is gloomy, but if a person walks in with a baby, who smiles, the whole room lightens up. The effect of a smile is powerful – even when its unseen. Are you smiling now? Or maybe you are not, because life is not so easy at the moment , and you don’t feel like smiling. Sometimes though, if you force yourself to smile, you may be acting as if you are happy, and then, just sometimes, it may help you to feel a bit happier too.

I found this quote, which was actually an advert in a New York department store at Christmas.

The Value of a Smile

It costs nothing, but creates so much

It enriches those who receive it, without impoverishing those who give.

It happens in a flash, and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.

None are so rich that they can get along without it, and none are so poor, but richer for its benefits.

It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business and is the counter sign of friends.

It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and Nature’s bet antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody until it is given away.

And if, in the last minute rush, our salespeople should be too tired to give you a smile, may we ask you to leave one of yours?

For nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none left to give!

Stay safe and well. Till Next time.
