Vive La Difference!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE - INVASIVE AND NON-INVASIVE LIPOSUCTION?

  • Invasive Liposuction means – Liposuction SURGERY – which you would receive under anaesthetic.
  • Non-Invasive Liposuction – Cavitation – Ultrasound Cavitation – (all the same process) which you would have performed in a clinic or salon in an hour and go straight back to normal living.

We hear the term “liposuction” and to most of us, it means “going under the knife”. Thousands of men and women take the decision every year to reduce their thighs, hips, knees, stomach and arms. It is one of the most popular types of plastic surgery in the UK and it will sculpt, tone, and streamline your body to meet the image you have in your mind’s eye. That said, many of those patients are now opting for the less expensive, non-surgical option of Non-Invasive Liposuction, because the results can be excellent with the right machine and the right consultant. There is rarely any bruising, you can “drop a dress size” in your lunch hour and then go straight back to work. Below, I have explained both of these procedures so that you can make an informed choice, looking at the positives and negatives, then if you decide not to do either, at least you will know all about it.

SURGICAL LIPOSUCTION

What is surgical liposuction?

Neither Surgical liposuction or Non Invasive Liposuction is designed to be a weight loss procedure, although it can aid you to lose weight through either method.. Both are designed to tone and sculpt areas of the body that are causing you concern. Surgical Liposuction works with those larger areas of unwanted fat and could be a choice if you have already tried regular exercising and dieting but haven’t gained the results you would have liked to have seen.

The Procedure

Small incisions are made near to the chosen area. A cannula is inserted to suck out stubborn fat deposits either by pump or syringe. It takes between one and three hours to complete (depending on how much fat needs to be removed and the area of the body) and is performed under general anaesthetic.

How long will it take for results to show?

Results of surgical liposuction will start to show after just 4 weeks and will continue to improve for up to 3 months during which time you will wear controlling underwear. However, if you want longer lasting results you will need to change your lifestyle habits. This means sticking to a healthy diet after your surgery and stick to or commence a regular exercise routine. Surgical liposuction is not a `quick fix` solution, although it will appear that way. Our bodies will continue to make fat (adipose tissue) if we do not change our lifestyle habits, which means that unwanted fat will reappear after surgery without making those changes.

Looking at the benefits?

On the PLUS side

  • The procedure - Surgical liposuction has been practised for decades and is a highly effective body sculpting procedure.
  • It can remove large volumes of fat from your chosen areas.
  • The treatment is long-lasting but, only if are prepared to change your lifestyle to one of eating a healthy well-balanced diet with regular exercise.
  • Surgical Liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in targeted areas, making it difficult to regain weight in these areas but, not exclusively without your well-balanced diet and exercise.

Some Negatives

  • It is invasive, meaning that you have opted to have a voluntary operation where you are going to experience the small incisions in your body.
  • The recovery time is 1-2 weeks, so you will need to take this time off from work and physical activities.
  • Your body will experience bruising, swelling and possibly light damage to the skin surrounding your treatment area but, it would be expected to heal.
  • You will need to wear controlling or compression garments for up to 6 months after your surgical liposuction, which may not be terribly pleasant.
  • You will have chosen to have this procedure, which then comes under the category of “elective surgery” Although the procedure is delivered for the population regularly and is considered relatively safe, it is surgery just the same and therefore, inevitably it comes with risks. You would go to a private hospital for this and therefore, your surgeon will discuss it all with you thoroughly during your consultation.

NON-SURGICAL LIPOSUCTION

What is non-surgical liposuction, also known as Cavitation or Ultrasound Cavitation?

Cavitation – or Non-Surgical Liposuction is becoming much more popular because there is no need for any recovery time and there is no surgery involved. As I mentioned earlier, it is not the correct option if you want weight loss, but it will focus on sculpting and toning just the same as the surgical liposuction procedure. It uses 40KHZ or 80KHZ ultrasound to cause a process called cavitation, which generates a breakdown in the fat cell membrane, causing it to leak, and therefore reduce the adipose tissue volume. Your consultant will discuss the area that you would like to reduce and tone, which can be stubborn areas from places like, back, arms, stomach, bottom, legs, knees and hips.

What happens?

Non Invasive Liposuction uses ultrasound technology as mentioned above to target fat cells on your chosen targeted area. There is no need for any surgery and it rarely causes damage to the skin. All the cells in our body vibrate naturally but, the Ultrasound in the non-invasive liposuction speeds up the process in a clever and safe way. Vacuum therapy aids the elimination of the leaking fat to the lymphatic system, where it is processed naturally into triglycerides and then radio frequency tightens the skin.

How long will it take for results to show?

You usually see a difference after one treatment but so that you can generate the best results you would need a course of 6 sessions. However, it is not a “Cure-all” or a “Quick fix” and you will need to change your lifestyle to reflect a healthy diet and regular exercise. The vacuum stimulates the Lymphatic Drainage to encourage quicker results.

Looking at the benefits?

On the Plus side

  • Non-surgical liposuction is non-Invasive procedure so there is no scarring and bruising is rare.
  • No damage to surrounding tissue during non-surgical liposuction.
  • This type of liposuction comes with no downtime, so you will be able to return to work after your treatment.
  • No need to wear any different clothing but your current clothes will feel a little loser after treatment.
  • Non-surgical lipo is very much more affordable than surgical liposuction.

Some Negatives

  • Non-invasive liposuction can only really work on one area at a time.
  • Non-surgical liposuction usually requires 6 sessions, it’s not a one-off procedure.
  • Non-surgical liposuction cannot remove as much fat as surgical liposuction.
  • There are contraindications but your consultant will discuss these with you thoroughly.
  • You need great machines and great consultants for great treatment.
  • IT IS NOT A “CURE-ALL” YOU WILL NEED TO CHANGE YOUR CURRENT LIFESTYLE TO ONE OF HEALTHY DIET AND EXERCISE – BUT THIS IS THE SAME WHETHER YOUR CHOICE IS NON-INVASIVE LIPOSUCTION OR SURGICAL LIPOSUCTION
